Age Of Empires - Revisited

Why would you want to?

I think the game is more balanced with this patch, not perfect but better balanced. The main difference that most people would notice are the costs for chariots and chariot archers, they cost a little bit of gold instead of wood.

Also, all resources have been increased substantially. This should help in keeping the game going. Well I mad lost of changes including overland market trading smile

This is the change guide that I am currently working on:

1 Market Deletion remains bugged.
2 Land Trade is now possible between markets after building trade shop and trade unit.
1. Siege
Siege in the game was over powered. It could annihilate anything and was immune to any attack other than siege.
- All Catapult Attacks reduced by 10
- All Balista attacks reduced by 5
- Walk speed of siege is now 0.5
- Siege Boats have their speed reduced from 1.3333 to 1

2. Infantry
Infantry were very weak towards siege and archers in the original game. Masses of infantry fell to massed archers and siege. Infantry could not protect siege effectively even if that was their role.
- All Infantry including Archers have their HP increased by 20%

- Hoplite speed was increased to a base of 1 to help them chase siege and archers.
- Militia Unit Added
o Upgrade from Axemen so that in late game when Gold has run out the Militia can still be effective against towers.

o Added Bonus +1 Damage vs Buildings
- Pelstat Unit Added
o The Pelstat upgrades the basic Bowman to help counter Archer units. Many civilisations do not have ranged infantry or mounted infantry. They could not effectively defeat an Archer based army.

o Pelstat…………………………….Pierce Armour 3


3. Infantry Archers
Archers serve to weaken infantry but can take advantage of their range in many circumstances.
- All Archers have an increase in Pierce resistance.
- Bowman ……….. +2 Pierce Armour
- Improved Bowman ……… 1 Pierce Armour
- Composite Bowman …….. 2 Pierce Armour
Improved Bowmen Beat Bowmen and Composite Bowmen beat Improved Bowmen
The Pelstats beat Bowmen much easier than they beat Composite Bowmen.
4. Mounted Archers
The bane of many players was the chariot rush. This made it impossible for players who selected a civilisation without Chariots to compete. The Chariot war was considered the staple of Random Map games. Well it was only possible because the Chariots were economically cheap, costing wood and food. To make it fair, either the wood cost had to be raised to 140 per chariot or gold was needed to replace the Wood cost.
- All Mounted Archers …………………………………Minimum Range Added +1
- Chariot Archer …………………………………Food 60, Gold 40
- Chariots …………………………………………..Food 60, Gold 35
- Horse Archer Line ……………………………………+2 Pierce Armour
5. Cavalry
The Cavalry role as anti-archers was given a boost. Scouts and Cavalry are a little more effective against massed chariots or other Archers. Heavy Cavalry and Cataphracts serve well in the later game as they can withstand more attacks from Archers, Infantry and Siege.

6. Villagers
Villagers were very weak at the start of the game, and could very easily be killed by a handful of military units. To help protect villagers they now get more HP.
- Villagers …………………………………………HP + 15 (Start with 40 HP)
- Villager work rates increased by 15%
7. GAIA Map Resources
Often games would end because there was not enough Gold. There would be problems on some maps that generated only a little wood. On many occasions food gathering was difficult because food sources were spread very far away and the amount of food collected often was not enough. Likewise the investment in fishing ships was not worth such investment because the amount of fish did not make it worth the wood or fishing upgrades. - Fish…………………………… Raised from 250 to 500
-Berries………………………. Raised from 150 to 200
-Gazelles ……………………… Raised from 150 to 200
- Elephants……………………. Remain the Same
- Elephant King ……………… Raised from 300 to 500
- All Trees ………………………. Adjusted so all trees have the same 85 Wood
- Stone Mines -------------- Raised From 250 to 400
- Gold Mines ----------------Raised From 400 to 600
- Farms were also adjusted because people are now playing the game with population limits above the standard 75.
- Base Farm Food is 250
- Domestication Farming Upgrade Increases Farm Food to 325
- Plough Farming Upgrade Increases Farm Food To 400
- Irrigation Farming Upgrade Increases Farm Food To 475
8. Ships
The Hittite War Galleys were considerably Over Powered because of their range.
- Balance Testing Still underway
- Siege Boats now move slower 1.3333 to 1.0

2. How to install:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Find the location of the data folder where Age Of Empires is installed.
Normally: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\data
64Bit : C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\data
3. Backup the Empires.dat found in that data folder.
4. Extract the Age Of Empires Revisited 7z file
5. Place the extracted Empires.dat in the data folder mentioned in step 2
6. Have fun.

Is it RoR or just AoE? I'm not sure you specified. Anyhow, I think it sounds pretty good. Will have to check it out when I get a spare 5 mins. Although Pico loves his siege... so he might not be so happy about that. But oh well haha. Good work though. Sounds good smile

At the moment I am only making for AOE original. Most people seem to be playing the original online. But not only that I have been hesitant to make a ROR patch until I have balanced the original.

Don't think the changes are massive. The siege still own everything, but a lot less than they used to. In DM the game play is still pretty much the same except cavalry and archers can help out more effectively. Hoplites are not entirely wasted in a siege fight anymore. I think it just promotes a little bit of a mix in the army as opposed to just one unit. All civ bonuses remain as they were so your favorites civs should play similar as before. The only significant nerf was the Chariot cost which now costs Gold and Food. It delays the Bronze assault long enough for the opponent to either make the same or counter with cavalry. Unlike before cavalry are very effective 1v1 against chariots.

Yeah true, well good work... although to be honest I don't even bother with the original AoE... we all seem to play RoR here these days. But if you manage to move on and do a RoR patch.. I would be more than happy to give it a go smile

But ROR is has so many more balance issues it's not funny. I mean Sythe Chariot trample damage is ridiculous. I never played ROR much. Until I joined here.

What strategies and game modes do you or anyone else play in ROR?

Well to be fair we play custom scenario here these days. So that could consist of numerous different strategies more than commonly found in RM/DM. It really depends on the type of map we play. Although most of the newer CS maps are designed to balance out most of the issues you talk about. I guess in most cases, simply supporting higher display resolutions would make a remarkable difference. I know Voobly do that... but it means playing on voobly servers haha.

Perhaps you could download our maps and take a look for yourself. People that play are usually incredibly varied with their tactics, so it's a mixed bag.

When I was more active here we had some of my maps in the AKC bundle. I encourage you to take a look at the Scenarios bundled with the Revisited patch. There are many that should be fun if added to your existing bundle. If you are looking for a serverless lobby system Age4Greeks has a lobby that is exactly like MSN Gaming Zone. Otherwise the good thing about voobly is that if you host a Revisited patch game you also get the new scenario maps to choose from.
